Remembering Wembley - 10 years on
Monday 22nd
February, 2010
By Richard Ault
When
Tranmere kick-off against Brentford at Griffin Park this
Saturday, you may excuse any Tranmere fans who allow their mind
to wonder. For ten years ago to the very day, the club was
enjoying one of its proudest moments a mere seven miles up the
road.
A far
cry from the position we find ourselves in now, and to that of
recent years, heroes like Gareth Roberts, Andy Parkinson, Dave
Challinor, Nick Henry and, of course, David Kelly were wearing
the clubs colours with pride beneath the twin towers of Wembley
Stadium. It was the last ever League Cup Final to be
staged at the 'old' Wembley, and although the result eventually
went against Rovers, the majority of fans look back with
understandably proud memories.
Nobody
will ever take that momentous cup run away from us. The
mauling of Coventry at Prenton Park, the wonder goal that had
Middlesbrough's international stars stood aghast at in the
Quarter Final, or of course that mullering of Bolton at Prenton
Park.
To
celebrate the memories of that run to Wembley, and of course the
day itself, we're going to publish a number of articles this
week. Starting tomorrow, we will bring you some exclusive
new content and features, around the usual schedule of League
One articles.
Some of
the highlights to come:
-
Courtesy of our good friends over at Radio City, we have
sound clips of the Bolton semi-final, the final and more
-
Exclusive new interviews with two of the stars of the
run to Wembley
-
Where are they now? special, a quick look at where the
starting eleven from that day are now
-
Bishop's blog - Club Historian, Author and regular
cowsheds columnist Peter Bishop writes a special cup
final blog.
WE ALSO WANT
YOUR HELP!
This
feature will remain on the website forever more, giving you
somewhere to visit to reminisce of Wembley 2000 whenever,
wherever you like. We want YOUR pictures and
YOUR memories of that day.
We will
probably not be able to publish photographs of the match itself
due to all the copyright laws, but we are going to try and get
as many non-match pics up as possible. We have a lot in
our old Roversrearguard.com archives that will be salvaged and
re-published, but as always we want more!
If you
have photos of your journey down to Wembley, around the stadium,
walking up Wembley way or in the stadium itself, then feel free
to send your photos over to
editor@thecowsheds.co.uk
You can
also send your stories and memories to the same address, or post
them on the comment form below and they will be published later
this week.
Did you
travel on official club transport to Wembley or make your own
way, or maybe even travelled from the other side of the world to
be there? Perhaps you couldn't make the game itself but
have fond memories of what the day entailed? Whatever the
day held for you, let us know.
